FROM SELF TO COMMUNITY
John F. Kennedy’s presidential inauguration speech still echoes in the hearts and minds of millions of Americans: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.”
JFK felt the need to call his fellow countrymen to a higher value than self – the value of community. He wasn’t the first to think of it.
Jesus: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
The first step toward life-giving community is to decide to love others, at least as much as we love ourselves, and perhaps even more.
The second step is to believe that we were made for community. We need each other. I am a better me with others. You are a better you with others.
The third step is to understand that preferring others does not work against us, but in fact, takes us further toward becoming who we were meant to be. When we move to a place of placing the community above ourselves, ironically, we discover that our own needs and desires become fulfilled.
Where are you on that journey from self to community? What step do you need to take next?
