Christ Is Your Child’s “X” Factor

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

I took the children to a live recording of The X Factor South Africa, a television music contest in which various singers work their way to win first place. This particular show was built around the final 10 contestants. Five were eliminated that night by TV viewers. Each contestant performed a song tailored to their particular style, preference and voice. One sang a reggae tune with Bob Marley’s face flashing on a big screen and peace symbols from the 1960s hanging from the ceiling. Another chose a jazz piece with swan images appearing on the walls and feathers falling from the rafters. Each one had their ‘x-factor’ – something that distinguished them from everyone else, giving them the edge needed to do what only they could do – hoping it was what South Africans wanted.

Christ is the Christian’s x-factor, and we are to tailor our lives around him. Christ in us distinguishes us from the world and gives us the edge we need to do what only we can do, knowing it is what the world needs, too. When Christ resides in us, by his Holy Spirit, we are completely different. It’s not that we are the same with just an additional lodger in our hearts. No, we are intimately and forever entwined with Christ.

Your children need to know that their position as sons and daughters of God, who are filled with Jesus, means they are uniquely placed to win in life. And the prize? Christ himself. Abundant life. Heavenly rewards. A meaningful life. Wholeness. And so much more.
