THE DANGER OF COASTING
Christians slip into autopilot mode if they think heaven is the destination, instead of a relationship with Jesus.
If we’re on cruise control we often want something for nothing. We type h.e.a.v.e.n. into our GPS system, hop on the highway, put the car in coast, sit back and wait. After a while, we start to get bored and the scenery begins to catch our attention. We become easily distracted and temptation is harder to fight. We make a few pitstops to take in the local attractions and before we know it, the Christian life becomes about what we can get away with and still call ourselves a Christian. We start to question how much of the world we can have without losing our spot in heaven.
Life is not like Monopoly. We don’t receive Jesus like a get-out-of-jail-free card, tuck the card away for now, go ‘round and ‘round the board accumulating riches and property, doing the same things we’ve always done, and when we need Jesus, we pull out the card and hope that we’re still in the game.
Many people have prayed a prayer of salvation because they wanted into heaven, not because they wanted Jesus. And unfortunately, they often end up coasting through life with little thought of God at all.
