How Pathetic Is Your Jesus?

Do your thoughts about Jesus accurately portray his real power and abilities? Some Christians act as if he’s powerless without us.

 ·  Nobody knows him, so we have to make him known.

·  Nobody likes him, so we have to make him likeable.

·  Nobody relates to him, so we have to make him relevant.

·  Nobody thinks he has anything to offer, so we have to prove that he’s actually a fairly smart guy.

We’re confused. Jesus does not rely on us. We rely on him.

·  He was famous before we existed and he’ll be forever famous after we are gone.

·  He’s not only likeable, but he’s irresistible.

·  He draws all humankind to himself (John 6:44).

·  He’s not only relevant, but he knows every minute detail about every person on this planet (Luke 12:7, Psalm 139) and he has the ability to speak to them in the exact way they need.

·  Not only does he hold the world in his hands, but he is also an expert on every subject, person, thing, theory and idea in existence. He’s the smartest person alive and he continually offers his assistance to us.

All we have to do is ask and rely on him. For the sake of his Father’s glory, he is anxious to be relied upon. “And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it” (John 14:13-14).

As John Piper says, “God is not looking for people to work for him, so much as he is looking for people who will let him work for them. The gospel is not a Help Wanted advertisement. Neither is the call to Christian service. On the contrary, the gospel commands us to give up and hang out a Help Wanted sign. Then the gospel promises that God will work for us if we do.”
