Re-think Your WWJD Bracelet!

A popular wrist bracelet worn by Christians all over the world bears the inscription WWJD, which is an acrostic meaning What Would Jesus Do. The hope is that as we encounter situations that require a godly decision, we glance at our bracelet and with our best efforts try to discern what Jesus would do if he had to make the same decision. In principle I can understand this, but it’s not God’s best for us.

Here’s an idea – why don’t we just ask him what to do? When we open a conversation with Jesus, we will not only find him willing, but desperate, to speak with us. It will also help us to break the sinful tendency of self-reliance. A better interpretation of WWJD might be Walk With Jesus Daily.

During a prayer time, someone once said, “God sees your heart and knows you are willing. Many people have gifts and talents to offer God, but God is searching for hearts that are willing.”

That really impacted me. Willingness is key if we are to receive all God wants for us.

The best thing about being willing and open to God is that it throws us upon his grace and not our own ability. This type of dependency is developed through a continual re-occurring question. We need to train ourselves to ask, “Jesus, what is it that you want? What would please you at this moment?” At first, we find ourselves answering that question on Jesus’ behalf. That’s okay. He can handle our small beginnings. But soon God’s promise kicks in. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). And “The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you” (2 Chronicles 15:2). Before long we will discover the Holy Spirit within us raising his voice over our own conscience and convenience with his reply. A conversation begins.
