Your Calling

“By myself I can do nothing” (John 5:30).

I didn’t say those words, although they would be true of me. They were spoken by Jesus. Think about that for a moment. Jesus – the water-to-wine guy. Jesus – the one who used waves as stepping stones. Jesus – the man who filled five thousand bellies with a few loaves of bread. Jesus – the traveling physician who diagnosed, treated and healed all at the same time and with just one touch. He didn’t take blood to save others; he gave it to save the entire world. How could he say that he could do nothing by himself? Does God have limits? Would God allow himself to be dependent on another? Would God allow his hands to be tied? Yes. Why? He would let his hands be tied for the same reason he would let his hands be nailed. For love. For relationship. For obedience.

Jesus was dependent on God through the Holy Spirit – while he was on earth, before he was on earth and forever. The Trinity is, and has been, and will be in eternal mutual submission and interdependence. At the heart of God is relationship. God is love. There is no greater expression of love and unity and interdependence and submission than our triune God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are so close, that indeed, they are the same person.

And where do you fit in to all of that? Well, if you're a believer then you are seated in Christ. Relationship is now at the center of your heart. Dependence on another is now your calling.
