MONEY AND MY CHOCOLATE ADDICTION
Money has got a hold on you if it has become an idol in your life.
The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and I walk that line from my front door to the refrigerator door every evening after a long day’s work. I open the fridge and scour its contents for the two Cs in my life: Chocolate and Coke. Sadly, this has become a daily habit.
I’d like to think that I can stop at any time. But I also know that I’m not really just looking for a caffeine fix. I’m looking for comfort. Chocolate and Coke comfort my body after a stressful day.
Our bodies take a beating every day. And the truth is, so do our hearts. The body suffers from long hours. The heart? From strained relationships. The body crumbles under heavy assignments. The heart? Under harsh criticism. The body feels the pressure of increased responsibilities. The heart feels the pain of inflated failures. The body takes life’s punches in the knees and the back and the neck. The heart takes the hits in the very core of our identity. The first deals with space and time. The latter deals with our significance and security. So, if chocolate comforts a weary frame, then what comforts a wounded soul?…
Where do you turn for comfort? You see, that which you love and trust will become what you obey. When things are tough, are you tempted to think money is the answer, or do you turn to God? What worries you more — less money or less of God? What do you daydream about — making money, or living for God? If making more money comforts you more than having more of God, then money probably has got a hold on you.
