Unstoppable Confidence
The last words of Jesus that Luke records are, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day. And repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high” (Luke 24:46-49, emphasis added).
Wow! What confidence we can have! Over the past few weeks we’ve seen how the gospel writers (Matthew, Mark and Luke) all ended their books with the promise of power through Christ and his Spirit. If you don’t have it in your own life, then ask God to reveal it to you and give you his power.
The Holy Spirit gives us that power; the church creates the opportunity to access that power and then advancing the kingdom of God gives us the opportunity to exercise that power.
“What, then shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us” (Romans 8:31)?
God is gathering a people to himself, who love and obey him above all. We are not only a part of that people, but we are also gatherers of the people of God. That is our prearranged purpose in Christ – to make disciples of all nations. Embracing that call is part of the realization of our identity in God.
God in his goodness hasn’t left us alone in that commission. Through the Holy Spirit, the church and the kingdom of God he equips us with vision, gifts and his power – tailored to each one of us and designed for his ultimate glory and our ultimate joy.
From the day we are saved and throughout the rest of eternity we will be on the great journey of entering deeper and deeper into the depths of our identity, belonging and purpose through Jesus and bringing others into theirs. Our purpose will always be to pursue him and spread his glory, from here through eternity.
