Son of God

Psalm 2:2,6-7 "The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One... Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 'I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.' I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, 'You are my Son today I have become your Father.'"

I've got a birth certificate. It confirms more than my existence or my birth date, it tells me who my father is. Of course, the fact that I look identical to my father also confirms his identity, but so does that piece of paper. But not everyone has a birth certificate. And not everyone has a father's name on it either. Jesus was one of those. No piece of paper. No earthly look-a-like that he could call Dad. Not even a DNA test could've helped. How, then, did folks come to identify him as the Son of God?

Since that day the psalmist prophesied that the Anointed One (another name for the Messiah) was going to be the Son of God, everyone knew that when that guy showed up, he'd be related to the Most High. That’s the background for Nathanael's statement in John 1:49, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” He was saying, “You're the one expected in Psalm 2."

But what sealed it - more than a piece of paper, more than a DNA comparison and more than facial recognition - was the voice of a proud Daddy on the day his son was baptized.

Matthew 3:17 "And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'"

If you were there, you would've believed the booming voice. But know this, God's voice is still telling us about his Son - through the prophesies, through the Scriptures, through the accounts of those who knew him and those who know him now. And if you'll listen, you'll hear for yourself.
